2017 Blue Mountain Wildlife Trail Race Series

What is the Trail Race Series?  The Trail Race Series is the main fundraiser for Blue Mountain Wildlife.  It builds on the two popular races from the Northern Berks QUAD Games - the "Bartram Breeze" and the "Mad Dash" - and adds a third new race, the "Run To The Rock".  It is three trail races in the northern Berks County area designed to promote physical fitness as part of a healthy lifestyle and to highlight the outdoor recreational opportunities in the northern Berks County area. Each event includes an “extreme” course for the avid fitness enthusiast, a 5K course for the middle-of-the-road athlete and a shorter “family” course for kids or beginning athletes. Each race features: online registration, a DJ providing post-race entertainment, a hot brunch after the race, activities for the kids and both tech and 50/50 cotton/poly t-shirts.  Each race is its own event and requires separate registration.  You can pe-register for all three, either one at a time or all three together, using online registration at the Blue Mountain Wildlife Store . Try one or try them all!  Check out the BMW Facebook page for pictures, questions and comments.

Where and When are the Trail Race Series Races? The 2017 TRS Races include the following races:

Saturday April 22, 2017 Bartram Breeze Trail Races

The “Bartram Breeze” 10K, 5K or 2K Trail Races at the Kernsville Dam Recreation Area, Tilden Township. An easy start to the TRS. The race is on a rails-to-trails trail – reasonably flat and no traffic to contend with. These are out-and-back courses along the Bartram Trail starting at the Monument Parking Lot.  The trail follows the scenic Schuylkill River for much of the race and shows off the mountainous scenery of northern Berks and southern Schuylkill counties.

The 10K race will begin at the Monument just off Kernsville Dam Road and run north on the Bartram Trail for five kilometers, then reverse and return to the finish line.  The course on a well-groomed trail and change in elevation is less than 75 feet.

The 5K race will begin at the Monument just off Kernsville Dam Road and run north of the Bartram Trail for 2.5 kilometers (almost to Brady Spring), then reverse to the finish line.  Change in elevation is about 30 feet.

The 2K race will begin at the Monument just off Kernsville Dam Road and run north on the Bartram Trail for one kilometer, then reverse and return to the finish line.  Change in elevation is negligible.

The John Bartram Trailhead does not have a formal street address.  Your favorite GPS service may not locate it easily.  Try Kernsville Dam Road, Hamburg, PA, 19526.  If all else fails, use the nearby Cracker Barrel address of 21 Industrial Drive, Hamburg, PA, 19526.

Saturday May 20, 2017 Mad Dash Trail Races

The “Mad Dash” 5-Mile, 5K or 2.5K Trail Races at the Hamburg Reservoir, Reservoir Road, Windsor Township.  This race is not a killer but it is challenging nonetheless.

The challenging 5-mile course runs along the gravel and dirt access road up the wooded south slope of the Blue Ridge, past the east side of the reservoir to the helipad at the top of the ridge, then turns to the west along the ridgeline before turning back downhill past the west side of the reservoir and to the finish line.  Rocky trails, steep slopes, clear creeks  and beautiful views of northern Berks County abound.  Race length is 5 miles and change in elevation is approximately 740 feet.

The 5K Race will begin at the gate above the Hamburg Reservoir Parking Area and runs along the gravel access road through the wooded south slope of the Blue Ridge, crosses the creek, turns right and runs past the shelter, then back to and around the reservoir, returns to the creek, repeats a second loop to the shelter and around the reservoir and returns to the finish line.  Race length is 5,000 meters (5 Kilometers or about 3.1 miles) and change in elevation is approximately 250 feet.

The 2.5K race will begin at the gate above the Hamburg Reservoir Parking Area and runs along the gravel access road through the wooded south slope of the Blue Ridge, up to the east side of the reservoir, then loops around the picturesque Hamburg reservoir to the west side and turns back down the access road to the finish.  Race length is 2,500 meters (2.5 Kilometers or about 1.6 miles) and change in elevation is approximately 250 feet (all in the first kilometer).

Saturday June 24, 2017 Run To The Rock Trail Races

The “Run To The Rock” 10K, 5K and 2.5K Trail Races at the Hamburg Community Park at 2nd and Island Streets in Hamburg.

The 10K Race uses all of the trails at the Kernsville Dam Recreation Area, from the Etchberger Trail to the Therman Madiera Switchback to the Cabela's Wetlands Trail to the Lowlands Trail to the Pulpit Rock Trail and back.  All trails are fairly flat with a few small hills and are on or near the scenic Schuylkill River.  The Etchberger, Switchback and Wetlands Trails are similar to Rail Trails - wide and topped with stone.  The Lowlands Trail and the Pulpit Rock Trail are more classic foot trails - narrow and packed earth.

The 5K Race uses the Etchberger Trail, the Therman Madiera Switchback and the Cabela's Wetlands Trail before returning to the Hamburg Park. Participants will enjoy the shaded trails along the Schuylkill River, as well as the open trails through the Kernsville Desilting Basin.

The 2.5K Race uses the Etchberger Trail and the Therman Madiera Trail.   Participants will enjoy viewing the scenic Schuylkill from both sides and from above (while crossing the historic Pennsylvania Railroad bridge).
