2014 Northern Berks QUAD Games

The 2014 QUAD Games are on!  Same events as last year with a few new tweaks.  This year we are adding a free Hot Lunch for all registered participants and volunteers!  Post-Race will now have pizza, burgers, hoagies or hot dogs, depending on the sponsor.  We are also adding a 5K option to the Bartram Breeze and the Mad Dash. Both courses are a happy middle between the Family races and the Extreme races. Remember, times from either 5K DO NOT count toward the QUAD, so it you are serious about doing the QUAD, stick with either the Family or Extreme races.

Check back often as we update get closer to the first Race Day - Saturday April 5th.

Don't forget to "Like" us on Facebook for the latest race day updates, photos and results.

The Mad Dash Trail Races - Saturday May 31, 2014

The second set of races of the 2014 QUAD Games will be the Mad Dash 5-Mile or 2.5K Tail Races at the Hamburg Reservoir.

Also running, the Mad Dash 5K.  Not a QUAD Games race but a good middle distance that many runners like.  Same start time on the same course as the Extreme and Family Mad Dash races.

The challenging 5-mile course runs along the gravel and dirt access road up the wooded south slope of the Blue Ridge, past the east side of the reservoir to the helipad at the top of the ridge, then turns to the west along the ridgeline before turning back downhill past the west side of the reservoir and to the finish line.  Rocky trails, steep slopes, clear creeks  and beautiful views of northern Berks County abound.  Race length is 5 miles and change in elevation is approximately 740 feet.

The 2.5K race will begin at the gate above the Hamburg Reservoir Parking Area and runs along the gravel access road through the wooded south slope of the Blue Ridge, up to the east side of the reservoir, then loops around the picturesque Hamburg reservoir to the west side and turns back down the access road to the finish.  Race length is 2,500 meters (2.5 Kilometers or about 1.6 miles) and change in elevation is approximately 250 feet (all in the first kilometer).

The 5K Race will begin at the gate above the Hamburg Reservoir Parking Area and runs along the gravel access road through the wooded south slope of the Blue Ridge, crosses the creek, turns right and runs past the shelter, then back to and around the reservoir, returns to the creek, repeats a second loop to the shelter and around the reservoir and returns to the finish line.  Race length is 5,000 meters (5 Kilometers or about 3.1 miles) and change in elevation is approximately 250 feet.   The 5K race is a stand-alone event and is not part of the QUAD Games series.

The Bartram Breeze 10K, 5K or 2K "Road" Races - Saturday April 5, 2014

Come out to Hamburg for the flat and fast Bartram Breeze “Road” Races.  A 10K Extreme Race or a 2K Family Race on the John Bartram Rail Trail starting at the Kernsville Dam Recreation Area just east of Cabela’s.

The 10K race will begin at the Monument just off Kernsville Dam Road and run north on the Bartram Trail for five kilometers, then reverse and return to the finish line.  The course on a well-groomed trail and change in elevation is less than 75 feet.

The 2K race will begin at the Monument just off Kernsville Dam Road and run north on the Bartram Trail for one kilometer, then reverse and return to the finish line.  Change in elevation is negligible.

The Bartram Breeze 5K.  Not a QUAD Games race but a good middle distance that many runners like.  Same start time on the same course as the Extreme and Family Bartram Breeze races.

From PA Route 61, take Jetson Drive to Industrial Drive, cross the railroad tracks and then turn left onto Kernsville Dam Road.

Race registration opens at 8:00 and closes at 8:50.  Races start at 9:00.

As with previous QUAD Games, we have great courses; registrant goodie bags; cash prizes for the fastest male and female Extreme racers and a generous slate of awards for both races and the series; plenty of drinks, fruit and baked goodies to replenish the body; a hot lunch from Hamburg's own Pizza Como for registered participants and volunteers; plenty of door prizes; and plenty of BMW and QUAD gear for purchase.  If you registered for the series, you are guaranteed a tech shirt (Extreme QUAD) or 50/50 shirt (Family QUAD).  If not, then get them on Race Day while supplies last.

2012_quad_logo.jpgWhat are the QUAD Games? The Northern Berks QUAD is a three-season four-event regional competition to promote physical fitness and cross-training as part of a healthy lifestyle and to highlight the outdoor recreational opportunities in the northern Berks County area. Each event includes an “extreme” course for the avid fitness enthusiast and a shorter “family” course for the more casual athlete. Athletes competing on all four of either the “Extreme” courses or the “Family” courses are eligible for the QUAD Games awards at the conclusion of the QUAD Games in September. This is the eighth year for the QUAD Games and we’ve got some great features: online registration through Active.com, a DJ will be providing post-race entertainment, we’ll have a hot lunch after the races, activities for the kids and we’ve got a new logo on tech shirts – guaranteed for those pre-registering for the Extreme QUAD. If you’ve never tried the QUAD, now is the time. If you’ve done the QUAD before, check out what we’ve got to offer in 2014 – you'll like what you see.

Where and When are the QUAD Games? The 2014 QUAD Games include the following races: Saturday April 5, 2014 - The “Bartram Breeze” 10K “Road” Race and 2K Family “Road” Run at the Kernsville Dam Recreation Area, Tilden Township. An easy start to the QUAD. The race is on a rails-to-trails trail – reasonably flat and no traffic to contend with. The trail follows the scenic Schuylkill River for much of the race and shows off the mountainous scenery of northern Berks and southern Schuylkill counties. We also have the stand-alone "Bartram Breeze" 5K "Road" Race.   Saturday May 31, 2014 – The “Mad Dash” 5-Mile Trail Race and 2.5K Family Trail Run at the Hamburg Reservoir, Reservoir Road, Windsor Township. Now the fun begins. This one’s an entry-level trail race – not a killer but challenging nonetheless. If you’re getting bored with 5Ks, give this one a try. The “Extreme” race is two miles up the mountain (740 foot vertical climb), one mile along the ridge and two miles back down. The “Family” race is also challenging, but not as high or rocky.  We've also got the stand-alone "Mad Dash" 5K Trail Race.    Sunday July 27, 2014 – The “Dutch Country” 15-Mile Bicycle Race and 5-Mile Family Fun Bike Ride at the Blue Mountain Academy, Tilden Township. The perennial favorite. Shift gears and get on your bike. The “Extreme” race is three five-mile loops through the rolling farmland just west of Cabela’s on a closed –road course. The “Family” race is just one loop. Sunday September 28, 2014 – The “U Can DU It” Sprint Duathlon and the Family Mini-Duathlon at the Tilden Elementary School, Tilden Township. Finish the QUAD with a bang. This new 2-mile road run/8-mile bike/2-mile road run course is sure to challenge beginners and old pros alike. The “Family” race introduces kids and novices to the challenges of a Duathlon without being overwhelming.

For all races, registration opens at 8:00 a.m. and the races start at 9:00 a.m. All participants are welcome. Pre-register or show up on race day. Give any of the races a try or sign up for all four.

Okay, how much is registration? Registration for the Extreme QUAD Games is $65 and includes all four races plus a free tech shirt. Registration for the Family QUAD Games is $20 and includes all four races and a free 50/50 shirt. Try finding a better deal anywhere in eastern PA!
